EVANSTON, Ill. – Matt Grevers and Jake Herbert are ready to not only represent the United States at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, but also their alma mater, Northwestern. Both will be competing on the biggest stage in the coming days as the Opening Ceremonies of the London Olympics take place Friday, July 27.
Grevers is a member of the U.S. swimming team, competing in the 100 backstroke, 400 freestyle relay and 400 medley relay, while Herbert will wrestle in the 84 kg/185 lbs. freestyle division. NBC's broadcast schedule includes a number of live events and some on tape-delay, but fans can watch every Olympic event in real time via a webstream available on NBCOlympics.com. Grevers is looking to add to his medal collection in 2012. He took home silver in the 100 back and was a part of two gold medal-winning relay teams at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. Grevers has a busy day on July 29 with heats and semifinals for the 100 backstroke and the 400 freestyle relay. The 100 backstroke final takes place July 30 and he wraps up competition August 3-4 with the 400 medley relay, which is the final swimming event of the 2012 Olympics. The Lake Forest, Ill., native graduated from Northwestern in 2007 after winning three individual NCAA titles (two in 100 back, one in 200 back).
A two-time NCAA Champion and Hodge Trophy recipient at Northwestern, Herbert is making his first Olympic appearance and will compete Saturday, August 11. The 2009 NU grad earned a spot on Team USA after winning the U.S. Olympic Team Trials back in April. Herbert looks to become the third former NU wrestler to medal at the Olympics as Bryan Hines won bronze in 1924 and Jack Riley took home silver in 1932.
