OMAHA, Neb. -- Nineteen current, former and future Northwestern swimmers are competing in the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials beginning today, Monday, June 25, and running through next Monday, July 2, in Omaha, Neb., searching for a berth at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
Current or 2012 graduates representing the Northwestern men are Charlie Rimkus, Varun Shivakumar, Dominik Cubelic, Chase Stephens and John Frutiger. They are joined by alumni Alex Tyler, Sean Mathews and former Olympians Matt Grevers and Mike Alexandrov. Grevers won two relay golds and a silver medal in the 100 backstroke at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, while Alexandrov represented his native Bulgaria at the 2004 and 2008 Olympics. He has since switched his sport citizenship to the United States, and will be attempting to qualify for a third Olympics with the red, white and blue.
For the women, 2012 first-team All-America breaststroker Jenny Wilson headlines a five-`Cat contingent which also boasts Meredith King, Becca Soderholm, Taylor Reynolds and Jackie Powell. Lauren Clifford also qualified, but an injury is keeping her away from competition this week.
Incoming men's swimmers Van Donkersgoed and Jordan Wilimovsky along with incoming women's Wildcats Julianne Kurke, Shelly Patton and Karen Turner also are competing in Omaha this week.
