COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Northwestern head volleyball coach Keylor Chan is spending part of his summer outside of Evanston so that he can help coach the U.S. Volleyball Women's National A2 Program.

The 2012 U.S. Women's National A2 Program features 48 student-athletes from 34 different colleges and universities. Chan has been designated as one of five to six coaches for the program this year. This will be his first time as a member of the coaching staff within the program.

"It is truly an honor to be chosen as one of the coaches charged with preparing the group of players in the national team program this summer," said Chan. "I look forward to heading to Ohio next week where I will be able to work with dozens of terrific athletes and coaches.

"I'm looking forward to the experience with U.S. Volleyball because it will undoubtedly help me to grow as a teacher and to expand my own abilities as a coach," said Chan.

Northwestern's bench boss is the only Big Ten coach who will serve as a coach this summer. Other coaches joining Chan on the A2 staff are Deitre Collins-Parker (San Diego State), Tanya Johnson (Georgia Tech), Nina Matthies (Pepperdine) and Jeff Stork (Cal State Northridge). One more may be added in the coming days.

Training begins Tuesday, June 26 at Ohio Dominican University in Columbus, Ohio, while the matches will be held June 30 - July 4 during the USA Volleyball Girls' Junior National Championships (GJNC) at the Greater Columbus Convention Center. During the pretournament training session, the athletes will be divided into four teams of 12 players that will play one match per day during the GNJC. All matches will be A2 competing against each other in a round-robin format followed by a semifinal and final round.

The Wildcats return eight letterwinners from last year's squad in 2012 including 2011 All-Big Ten selection Stephanie Holthus and All-Freshman team honoree Katie Dutchman. Northwestern will open the season at Marquette Tournament in Milwaukee, Wis. on August 24. The complete 2012 schedule will be released soon.
