EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern sophomore Marisa Bast (Orange, Calif./Villa Park) has been named a National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-America third-team selection, announced today by the organization.
Bast is the 10th Wildcat in the history of the program to earn All-American status. All told, those 10 student-athletes have won 19 total All-America awards. NU has had an All-American in seven of the last eight seasons, earning 14 awards in that time span.
Bast finished the regular season among the nation's leader in runs batted in, knocking in 1.17 per game to rank ninth in the country. Her 68 total RBIs rank second in NU single season history behind three-time All-American Garland Cooper's 70 from 2007. Bast also was among the national leaders in batting (.411), slugging (.730) and on-base percentage (.524). Most impressive about her numbers is the fact that Northwestern played the nation's No. 1 ranked nonconference strength of schedule in 2012.
Bast moved from second base to third base this year, picking up the position and growing into a defensive force by the end of the season. While routinely making the tough play courtesy of growing instincts and an incredibly strong arm, Bast compiled a .938 fielding percentage at her new position that included just four errors over NU's final 25 games of the season.
