EVANSTON, Ill. -- Six senior Northwestern football players are among the honorees in the 2012 National Football Foundation (NFF) Hampshire Honor Society, comprised of college football players from all divisions who each maintained a cumulative 3.2 grade point average (GPA) or better throughout their career.

Named to the Society from Northwestern are: offensive lineman Doug Bartels (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic), quarterback Dan Persa (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty), safety Brian Peters (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington), running back Jacob Schmidt (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander), defensive end Kevin Watt (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) and cornerback Ricky Weina (Union Grove, Wis./Union Grove Union).

In addition to achieving a 3.2 cumulative GPA, an honoree must have been a starter or significant substitute in one's final year of eligibility and must be fulfilling all NCAA-mandated progress toward degree requirements.

The NFF Hampshire Honor Society capitalizes on the NFF's current National Scholar-Athlete program greatly expanding the number of scholar-athletes the NFF can recognize each year. The program further strengthens the organization's leadership role in encouraging academic performance by the student-athletes who play football at the more than 700 college and universities with football programs nationwide. Jon F. Hanson, the chairman and founder of The Hampshire Companies, provided the endowment to launch the NFF Hampshire Honor Society in 2007.

Persa and Peters each earned All-Big Ten recognition on the field in 2011, while all six Hampshire Honor Society honorees also merited Academic All-Big Ten laurels for their work in the classroom. Schmidt and Watt also were Capital One Academic All-District selections during the 2011 campaign.
