EVANSTON, Ill. -- Anna Edwards (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) has been named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week for her efforts in helping Northwestern sweep a weekend series against Illinois and secure an NCAA Championship bid.
In the first game of the series Friday, Illinois hit a go-ahead home run in the fifth inning, but Edwards answered right away by leading off NU's half of the fifth with a game-tying solo shot to propel the Wildcats to the must-win victory.
In game two, Edwards added a late insurance RBI with a run-scoring double in the sixth to extend NU's two-run lead before scoring herself to account for the final 7-3 winning margin. She then secured her first-career triple in NU's 10-2 run-rule win in Saturday's season finale.
Northwestern's sweep gave it a 27-27 overall record on the season and made it possible to earn the Wildcats' eighth NCAA Championship field bid in the last 11 years.
Edwards is the third freshman Wildcat to earn Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors this year. She joins Olivia Duehr (Antioch, Ill./Antioch) and Amy Letourneau (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) in winning the award.
