EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern senior Adrienne Monka (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Rancho Cucamonga) has been named the Big Ten's Player of the Week after reaching two big home run milestones among many accomplishments in NU's five most recent contests.
First, Monka walked five times during Northwestern's two nonconference games to move her into ninth all-time in NCAA history in walks with 181. She then hit the 50th and 51st home runs of her career during a perfect 3-for-3 day with five RBIs in a road win at Northern Illinois. Monka is the fourth Wildcat to reach the 50 home run plateau.
In a Big Ten doubleheader sweep of Ohio State Sunday, Monka clubbed a tie-breaking two-run home run in the first game onto the roof of nearby McGaw Hall (the sixth home run to even reach the roof), becoming the first person to ever homer onto the roof twice in a career. She knocked in two runs in each side of the DH to give her nine RBIs in five games on the week.
Overall for the week, Monka batted .500, slugged 1.214 and reached base at a .667 clip in five games.
The award is the fifth of Monka's career. She shared the honor this week with Illinois' Jess Perkins.
Northwestern returns to the field in a 4 p.m. CT Wednesday showdown at DePaul.
