Wildcats Comeback Falls Short Against Beavers, 5-3

3/2/2012 12:00:00 AM | Softball

FULLERTON, Calif. -- Northwestern spotted Oregon State a five run lead Friday night at the DeMarini Invitational before mounting a furious late-inning comeback that fell just short in a 5-3 loss to the Beavers.

Northwestern now is 5-10 on the year following its loss while Oregon State improves to 15-4 with its victory.

Northwestern starter Amy Letourneau (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) opened the game needing just seven pitches to retire the Oregon State side in order in the bottom of the first.

In the bottom of the second, Oregon State loaded the bases with no outs on a leadoff hit by pitch and two singles that did not leave the infield. The next batter walked to force in the game's first run before the rally unraveled. The first out came on an interference call when the runner at third collided with Marisa Bast (Orange, Calif./Villa Park) as she attempted to track down a foul ball. A bases-loaded pop-up and strikeout for Letourneau eventually ended the frame with Northwestern trailing just 1-0.

Northwestern put together its first rally in the top of the third. Kristin Scharkey (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza) started things with a single to right before, one out later, Mari Majam (Pine Valley, Calif./Mountain Empire) drew an eight-pitch walk and Adrienne Monka (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Rancho Cucamonga) reached on an error to load the bags with two outs. The Wildcats were unable to get the RBI hit in that inning, however.

Oregon State broke through for three more in the bottom of the third, this time turning a bases-loaded, no-out situation into a 4-0 lead on a two-run single and a sacrifice fly to deep center that Scharkey did well to track down and catch in front of the fence. Prior to the sacrifice fly, Sammy Albanese (Belmont, Calif./Castilleja) entered the circle in relief of Letourneau, recording all three outs in the inning.

The Beavers pushed their lead to 5-0 with a two-out double in the fourth, though the Wildcats brought the ball in quickly to nail the trail runner in a pickle between third and home, ending the inning. When Oregon State threatened again in the fifth with runners at second and third and one out, Albanese slammed the door shut with a filthy strikeout and a flyout to Majam in left.

In the top of the sixth, Bast slammed the first pitch of the frame into left for a single before moving to second when a fielder botched the play on an Albanese grounder. One out later, a second Beaver error loaded the bases with one out and a wild pitch brought in the first Northwestern run. Anna Edwards (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) then ripped a double to the fence in center to plate two more and cut the NU deficit down to 5-3. At that point, Oregon State made a pitching change.

Scharkey came to the plate next and crushed a liner that was destined for the wall in right center, but the second baseman leapt and snow-coned the ball to help keep the Wildcats from scoring any more in the sixth.

Albanese again blanked the Beavers in the sixth, then Monka was hit by a pitch with one out in the Northwestern half of the seventh. She gave way to pinch runner Lauren Ackerman (St. Louis, Mo./Home schooled), but NU was unable to push any more runs across in the game.

Letourneau (3-6) took the loss, allowed four runs (three earned) on four hits and three walks with one strikeout in 2.0 innings as the starter. Albanese was effective in relief, allowing one run on four hits and a walk with four strikeouts.

Scharkey finished 2-for-3 while Edwards drove in two to lead Northwestern at the plate.

Northwestern returns to action at 1:15 p.m. CT/11:15 a.m. local against No. 2 California at the DeMarini Invitational.
