Northwestern Finishes Off LIU Brooklyn, 4-3

3/18/2012 12:00:00 AM | Softball

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Northwestern stymied a pesky LIU Brooklyn squad Sunday morning on getaway day at the USF Invite, stopping a bases-loaded, no-out rally in a tie ballgame in the fifth before going on to post a 4-3 victory.

Northwestern improves to 9-14 overall on the season with its win while LIU Brooklyn now is 8-24 on the season with its loss.

Sophomore Mari Majam (Pine Valley, Calif./Mountain Empire) singled confidently into left with one out in the top of the first for Northwestern and also stole second to account for NU's offense in the first frame of the game. In the bottom of the first, the initial two Blackbirds to the plate against NU starter Amy Letourneau (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) reached base, but the inning ended when senior Adrienne Monka (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Rancho Cucamonga) reached up to snag a line drive before turning to step on the bag at first to complete the unassisted double play.

In the bottom of the third, LIU Brooklyn broke through for the game's first runs on an RBI single and a sacrifice fly after a great Anna Edwards (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) running catch in foul territory during a bases-loaded, one-out situation. Northwestern battled back immediately in the top of the fourth, beginning with a Monka single to lead off the frame. Amanda Mehrsheikh (Chesterfield, Mo./Parkway Central) entered to run for Monka at first, then moved to second when Marisa Bast (Orange, Calif./Villa Park) followed Monka with a single of her own.

Edwards moved both runners up a bag with a productive groundout, then, with two outs, Letourneau helped her own cause by crushing a tripled beyond the reach of the center fielder in the right-center gap to knot the game, 2-2.

The Blackbirds tried to respond in the bottom of the fourth, loading the bases on a two-out Wildcats' error. The next batter hit a tricky grounder to Bast's backhand at third, and the sophomore did very well to knock it down, pick it up and make the throw to first to end the inning.

Northwestern took the lead thanks to a two-out rally in the fifth. Majam began the sequence when her speed caused the fielder at first to pull her foot on a grounder to the pitcher, allowing Majam to be safe on the error. Monka and Bast then recorded back-to-back singles, the latter of which tipped off the top of a leaping third baseman's glove to bring Majam home for a 3-2 Northwestern lead.

LIU Brooklyn responded in a big way in the bottom of the fifth, reaching base with its first four batters to tie the game, 3-3, and prompting Meghan Lamberth (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette) to enter the circle with no outs and the bases loaded. She first coaxed a shallow fly out to Majam in left before getting an infield fly to Emily Allard (Antioch, Calif./Antioch) at short. The final out came via a foul out to Majam and the Houdini act was complete.

Lamberth was not done making an immediate impact, though, not by a long shot. Well, maybe by a long shot. The junior led off the top of the sixth with a deep home run over the fence in left to again stake Northwestern to the lead, 4-3. The shot was her first of the year and her first in general since she crushed two in a win over UC Davis on March 6, 2010.

Northwestern made a bid for an insurance run in the top of the seventh when Monka was hit by a pitch and Edwards smacked a one-out single into left, but a nice double play from LIU Brooklyn ended the threat.

The first Blackbird to the plate in the bottom of the seventh worked a full-count walk, but Lamberth would eventually strand the runner at second to close out the game.

Lamberth (4-6) came on to earn the win in relief, stopping that fifth-inning rally cold while tossing 3.0 innings and allowing no runs on a hit and a walk with one strikeout.

Letourneau started the game, going 3.1 innings and allowing two runs on three hits and three walks with two strikeouts. Albanese threw 0.2 innings of relief, giving up a run on three hits and a walk with one K.

At the plate, Bast and Monka each led Northwestern with a pair of hits while Letourneau drove in two.

Northwestern returns to action with a nonconference doubleheader against Massachusetts and Hartford beginning at 11 a.m. CT/Noon ET Tuesday, March 20, in Clearwater, Fla., at the Eddie C. Moore Softball Complex.
