Northwestern Drops Nightcap to Syracuse, 9-3
2/25/2012 12:00:00 AM | Softball
SCHEDULE CHANGE ANNOUNCEMENT: Game times previously listed in the game program and on the host website for all of Saturday's Cathedral City Classic slate are one half hour late. Northwestern's Saturday games move up to begin at 2 p.m. CT (Noon local) against Colorado State and 4:30 p.m. CT (2:30 p.m. local) against No. 19 Oregon.
Syracuse improves to 4-3 on the season with its win while Northwestern now is 3-7 with its loss.
Sophomore Sammy Albanese (Belmont, Calif./Castilleja) got the start in the circle for Northwestern, fanning the first batter she saw in a relatively quiet top of the first. In fact, every half inning was relatively quiet until the top of the third. In that frame, the Orange used walks, wild pitches and an error to take a 2-0 lead in the game. Midway through the inning, junior Meghan Lamberth (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette) entered the game in relief.
In the bottom of the fourth, Adrienne Monka (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Rancho Cucamonga) led off with a ground rule double through the breakaway fencing at the park. Amanda Mehrsheikh (Chesterfield, Mo./Parkway Central) ran for Monka at second, but no further hits came for the 'Cats.
Syracuse built on its lead in the top of the fifth, loading the bases with one out on an error and two walks. The next batter then hit a grand slam to break the game open, 6-0, and Amy Letourneau (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) entered to pitch, quickly ending the inning.
After Letourneau struck out the side in the top of the sixth, Kristin Scharkey (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza) reached base in the bottom half after being hit by a pitch. With two outs, Marisa Bast (Orange, Calif./Villa Park) ripped a single through the left side of the infield to push Scharkey to second, but Albanese comebacker was gloved on the quick by the pitcher to end the NU threat.
The leadoff Orange batter in the seventh hit a home run, prompting Jenny Tyler's (Glendale, Ariz./Deer Valley) insertion into the circle. Syracuse would add two more before the inning ended with the score 9-0.
Anna Edwards (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) led off the bottom of the seventh with a base on balls, then came all the way around to score when Tyler ripped a double into the right-centerfield gap. After pinch hitter Julia Kuhn (Middletown, N.J./Middletown South) walked to put two runners on, senior pinch hitter Olivia Zolke (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa) loaded the bases when her grounder to short was mishandled for an error.
Allard knocked Tyler in with an RBI groundout then Scharkey did the exact same with Paige Tonz (Peoria, Ariz./Centennial), who had re-entered to run for Kuhn. That was all the further NU's scoring went, however, in the 9-3 loss.
Albanese (0-1) went 2.2 innings and took the loss, allowing two runs (one earned) on a hit and four walks with two strikeouts. Lamberth tossed 1.2 frames, giving up four runs (three earned) on a hit and four walks with one strikeout. Letourneau threw 1.2 innings, giving up one run on one hit with four strikeouts, and Tyler closed out the stats in the circle with one inning of work, allowing two runs on two hits.
