No. 1 Arizona State Outpaces Northwestern, 10-5
2/10/2012 12:00:00 AM | Softball
Northwestern is 1-1 after the first day of the 2012 season while Arizona State improves to 3-1 on the young year with its win.
Northwestern started a rally immediately in the top of the first thanks to a one-out walk from freshman Anna Edwards (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) and an Adrienne Monka (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Rancho Cucamonga) rifle of a double down the line and to the wall in left. Arizona State starter Dallas Escobedo was able to escape the jam unscathed, though.
Arizona State made the most of its first opportunity, plating five runs in its half of the opening inning. A two-run home run, a bases-loaded walk and a two-run single accounted for the runs, with the latter three being unearned due to an NU error during the frame.
Northwestern again put runners at second and third with one out in the top of the second, this time getting a leadoff Olivia Duehr (Antioch, Ill./Antioch) walk and a Sammy Albanese (Belmont, Calif./Castilleja) single before a beautiful Paige Tonz (Peoria, Ariz./Centennial) sacrifice bunt. One out later, junior Emily Allard (Antioch, Calif./Deer Valley) plastered a double over the head of the right fielder to drive in two and make it a 5-2 game.
The Sun Devils loaded the bases again in the bottom of the second, but Northwestern starter Meghan Lamberth (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette) escaped unscathed when she coaxed a lazy fly to left and a harmless grounder to Allard at short.
Edwards stepped to the plate to lead off the top of the third and sent the first pitch she saw from Escobedo over the center-field fence for her first-career home run and a 5-3 score in the game. Combined with home runs from freshman Duehr and sophomore Jenny Tyler (Glendale, Ariz./Deer Valley) in NU's season opener versus Texas Tech, Edwards' shot marked the third first-career home run for a Wildcat on Friday.
Arizona State responded to NU's fight with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to make the score 7-3 entering the fourth frame. After neither team pushed across runs in the fourth, the Sun Devils plated three more runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend their lead to 10-3.
Monka led off the top of the sixth by lifting a single into left center off the end of her bat, then gave way to pinch runner Kristin Scharkey (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza). Sophomore Marisa Bast (Orange, Calf./Villa Park) then made it rain in the desert with an incredibly high, towering, arcing, mesmerizing bomb of a home run to left that could have allowed Scharkey to circle the bases three times before it landed. The shot, Bast's first of the year, made the score 10-5.
Arizona State got a runner to third with no outs in the bottom of the sixth, but Lamberth did well to strand her there. Northwestern was unable to tack on any further runs in their half the seventh to end the game.
Lamberth (0-1) took the loss in the game, allowing 10 runs (only five earned) on eight hits and nine walks with one strikeout.
Monka recorded a pair of hits for NU while Bast and Allard each drove in two to pace the Wildcats at the plate.
Northwestern returns to action at 3 p.m. CT (2 p.m. local) tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 11, against No. 12 Washington before taking on New Mexico at 7:30 p.m. CT (6:30 p.m. local) Saturday night.
