EVANSTON, Ill. -- Four Wildcats have been honored as 2011-12 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-America Scholar-Athletes, the organization announced today (Dec. 6).

Sammy Albanese (Belmont, Calif./Castilleja), Marisa Bast (Orange, Calif./Villa Park), Amanda Mehrsheikh (Chesterfield, Mo./Parkway Central) and Kristin Scharkey (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza) all earned the accolade, which is bestowed upon players who achieved a 3.50 grade point average or higher during the 2011-12 academic year.

The quartet picked up Academic All-Big Ten honors back in the spring and saw success on the field as well during Northwestern's run to the NCAA Austin Regional finals. Bast won an NFCA All-America nod in May and also picked up a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar nod over the summer.

Northwestern begins its 2013 season February 8-10 at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz.
