Both Northwestern players in action posted singles victories and teamed up for a pair of victories in doubles on the opening day of competition at the Wildcat Invitational at Combe Tennis Center on Friday.
Senior Sidarth Balaji opened his day by posting a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Dominic Patrick of Iowa. He'll take on Jovan Parlic of Arkansas in a second-round matchup on Saturday.
Sophomore Alberto Zanotti also got a win on the afternoon. He was pushed to the limit by Akron's Grant Adams but was able to outlast him in a superbreaker, winning 6-7, 6-4, (10-8). The win sets up a matchup on Saturday with Javier Hernani of Marquette.
Balaji and Zanotti teamed up later in the day to post a pair of doubles victories. They took down Roberto Meza and Terence Weigland of Toledo, 8-4, in their first match of the day before advancing along in the winners' bracket with an 8-4 victory over Stephen Payne and Ross VanderPloeg of Western Michigan. The NU duo faces Aaron Wong and Jim Beckwith of Western Michigan in Saturday's final round.
Action resumes at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.
