Postgame Quotes

Northwestern vs. Purdue

Jan. 28, 2012

Welsh-Ryan Arena

Northwestern Head Coach Bill Carmody

Opening Statement…

“That was a tough loss for us. The whole thing, this stat sheet—it comes down to turnovers as far as I'm concerned. We had 16 turnovers and they had five turnovers in a two-point game. That's 16 times when we didn't get a shot, and that is just not acceptable. It seemed like a lot of them were at important times. We had ten in the first half and six in the second half. A couple of them [turnovers] we took from our own guys. Reggie [Hearn] made a great play at the top of our 1-3-1, but then Davide [Curletti] stole it back from him. It's just one of those things. I was proud of the way these guys were down most of the game, then came back, were down again, and then came back again. It came down to one shot, and [Robbie] Hummel made a great play. He ran down the baseline on [Dave Sobolewski] and made a nice shot. We weren't able to get anything at the end. We were trying to get the ball to Drew [Crawford] at the middle of the court, but there was just too much pressure from {Lewis] Jackson on Sobo.

On the last play…

“We didn't get what we wanted. The time before that –- off the timeout -- we got exactly what we wanted. There was about 20 seconds left in the game and Reggie [Hearn] had a nice drive. Sometimes you get them, and sometimes you don't.”

Purdue Head Coach Matt Painter

Opening Statement…

I thought it was a very interesting game. Kind of a game where no one can really get a good feel. We put that stretch together to put the other team away. Both teams kind of hung in there. We were fortunate to get a couple stops, and Rob [Hummel] to make that shot late. Northwestern's a good team. They're a tough matchup. We played a lot of our perimeter guys tonight out of respect for them. It's difficult sometimes with our size for them to play against their Princeton-style offense. I thought it helped us, in terms, that we only turned the ball over five times. We didn't use our skill in terms of shooting the basketball. We didn't shoot a high percentage from three. I thought we had some looks in the first half. If we could have made those shots, it may have opened some things up for us. But that was our game plan to go in there, and I thought we'd do a better job on the glass. Give Northwestern credit, they outrebounded us by 14, and a lot them were just hustle rebounds. Northwestern was quicker to the ball, they got more long rebounds, they got more 50-50 balls, and normally when that happens, you get beat, so we feel very fortunate getting outrebounded by 14 and still having a chance to win there at the end.

On Robbie Hummel's last shot…

“Well, in that 1-3-1, I don't think we were dictating anything. I don't think it had anything to with coaching, because we were struggling with it. We might not have been turning it over much, but we were struggling to get a good shot against their 1-3-1. And we were just fortunate that Lewis [Jackson] got enough penetration to draw the defense where Robbie could make that catch and beat his guy off the close-out. Obviously any time you have a guy like Hummel, you want the ball in their hands to make a decision or make a shot, and he made a good decision to drive that a little bit and not force it and make that shot.”

On Terone Johnson…

“Well Terone's done a good job for us. His ability to get to the basket and make runners and floaters really helps us especially when we have [D.J.] Byrd and Rob [Hummel] and Ryne [Smith] out there. We're trying to stretch the defense and keep everybody honest. Terone had a good game, and he just needs to continue to build off it. I thought he responded to starting. Sometimes guys start and it doesn't help them and sometimes it does help them. It looked like today it helped him.”
