EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern University head coach Pat Fitzgerald was elected to the Board of Trustees of the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) today. Fitzgerald, along with three other college head coaches, were elected by members attending the 2012 AFCA Convention in San Antonio, Texas.
Fitzgerald joins a group of distinguished head coaches who guide the organization. The Board formulates policy and provides direction for the AFCA, which was founded in 1922 by Amos Alonzo Stagg, John Heisman and others. The AFCA has more than 11,000 members from all levels of the profession.
Fitzgerald, who will represent the Big Ten Conference on the Board, just completed his sixth season at Northwestern and has guided the Wildcats to four consecutive bowl berths. In 2008, he was named the Big Ten Coach of the Year by the Touchdown Club of Columbus after leading the Wildcats to a nine-win season and a berth in the Valero Alamo Bowl. He has served on the AFCA's Ethics Committee since 2009.
In addition, the Wildcats football program is enjoying unprecedented academic success under Fitzgerald. NU set a program best with 69 players earning a 3.0 or better grade point average this past fall and 31 players earning Academic All-Big Ten recognition. Northwestern continues to rank at the top or near the top for best graduation rates nationally.
