MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- Northwestern's 2011 fall schedule began in earnest Friday with the first day of the Milwaukee Tennis Classic. NU squared off against conference foe Wisconsin in a number of singles matches, with freshman Nikhil Jayashankar securing NU's lone victory of the early session in his collegiate debut.
Jayashankar defeated Badgers sophomore Austin Akers, 6-3, 7-5.
Jayashankar's fellow freshman Alberto Zanotti went the distance in his debut, falling in a third-set superbreaker to Wisconsin's Alex Teppert, 6-4, 1-6, 1-0 (11-9). Senior and defending MTC singles champion Tobias Reitz also needed a superbreaker to decide his match against UW's Billy Bertha, coming up short in the end by a 1-6, 6-2, 1-0 score.
In other morning action, senior Eric Spector was defeated by Alexander Kostanov, 6-4, 6-1, while freshman Alexandru Pasareanu fell to Alex Robles of Wisconsin, 6-4, 6-4. Junior Chris Jackman was forced to retire after falling in the first set to Fredrik Ask, 6-2.
Northwestern also split two doubles matches on the day, with Spector and Jayashankar collaborating to defeat Marquette's Logon Collins and Jonathan Schwerin, 8-3. NU's Pasareanu and Reitz, however, dropped an 8-6 outcome to the Golden Eagles' Jose Carlos Gutierrez Crowley and Dan Mamalat.
Zanotti won his first career singles match when he bested Marquette's Drake Kakar, 6-4, 7-6.
On Saturday, Northwestern is scheduled to again face Wisconsin, this time in doubles, followed by a round of singles against Ball State. For complete updated results throughout the day, visit the MTC event page by clicking here
