The Match
Northwestern plays its final non-conference match of the season Wednesday, as the Wildcats pay host to cross-town rival Loyola (Chicago). It's the third game the Ramblers will play at Lakeside Field this season -- but first against NU. Loyola participated in the Lakeside Classic back in August, facing Cincinnati and Dayton.
Scouting the Ramblers
Goals are typically at a premium when Loyola steps on the pitch. The Ramblers are averaging less than one goal per match in 2011, while allowing their opponents to score just eight times over their first seven contests. In fact, all seven games have featured at least one team being shut out. The Ramblers have split time in goal this season between freshman Monica Gonyo -- who leads the team with three shutouts posted -- and senior Katie Groesch. Ana Michelini leads Loyola in scoring with five points (two goals, one assist). Loyola lost its first true road game of the season Sunday, falling 4-0 at Iowa State.
Series Information
Northwestern enjoys a 9-1-1 lead in the all-time series between the cross-town rivals, including a 5-1-0 mark in Evanston. The schools last met in 2009, when Kay Sampson's overtime goal lifted the Wildcats to a 1-0 victory. NU has won the last three meetings in the series, with the lone loss to Loyola coming back in 2005.
Last Time Out
Sophomore Kate Allen continued her scoring streak, but the Wildcats gave up a second-half equalizer on a penalty kick and then a double-overtime goal as they fell at Illinois State, 2-1, on Sunday. Allen's goal was her third in as many games, and came off an assist from freshman Sami Schrakamp -- the second time this season the duo have connected for a Northwestern goal.
