EVANSTON, Ill. -- The 2011-12 academic year may still be weeks away, but the athletic year officially got underway Friday at Northwestern as the women's soccer team held its first practices of the fall.
Stephanie Foster's Wildcats, the first NU team to report to officially report to campus, held a pair of practices at Lakeside Field. The team opened its morning practice with a conditioning session before playing an 11-on-11 scrimmage. The 'Cats returned to the field several hours later for an afternoon training session.
"We've seen a lot of great things already today," Foster said before the afternoon session began. "Our freshman class is going to add a lot of depth and competition to our team. Our first session was really successful and got us excited."
Northwestern will open its season at Marquette on Aug. 21. The Wildcats' home opener will be at the Lakeside Classic Aug. 26.
