EVANSTON, Ill. -- Senior Emily Langston (Los Altos, Calif./Los Altos) scored her second goal in as many games Sunday, but Northwestern gave up a goal 1:42 into overtime and fell to Dayton, 2-1, in the final game of the 2011 Lakeside Classic.
Langston's goal came in the 38th minute off a throw-in by sophomore Nicole Jewell (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville Road). Jewell launched her throw into the box, where it bounced through traffic and allowed Langston to get a head on it. Her initial header was deflected by Dayton goalkeeper Katherine Boone, but Langston followed her shot and drove it into the back of the net.
The goal is Langston's second of the season, which matches her career-high set in 2010.
The Wildcats (0-3-0) came out strong from the opening whistle, outshooting Dayton (4-0-0), 7-2, in the first half, including strong chances from Julie Sierks (Edina, Minn./Edina) and Nicole Sebo (Downers Grove, Ill./North).
But it was the Flyers who got on the board first, when Kelsey Smigel scored in the 20th minute after just entering the match as a substitute.
The score remained deadlocked through the second period, although NU nearly took the lead midway through the period when Georgia Waddle (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) took a shot that was deflected to Kate Allen (Whitehouse, Ohio/Anthony Wayne). Allen's shot hit the post, and the match remained tied into overtime.
Less than two minutes into the extra session Dayton's Colleen Williams picked up her second assist of the match with a feed to Juliana Libertin, who shot across the goal from the left side to score the game-winner.
The Wildcats will return to action on Thursday, Sept. 1 when they face Saint Mary's (CA) in the first of a two-game West coast road trip. NU returns to Lakeside Field to face Loyola (Chicago) on Sept. 14. The Ramblers played Cincinnati to a 0-0, double-overtime tie earlier Sunday at Lakeside Field.
