IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Several Northwestern men's and women's swimmers competed with their respective clubs July 21-24 at the Speedo Champions Series Central Zone meet in Iowa City, Iowa, earning five total U.S. Olympic Trial cuts during the competition.
Senior John Frutiger (Alma, Mich./Alma) led the way for the Wildcats' contingent at the meet, earning Olympic Trial cuts in the 200-meter freestyle and the 200-meter individual medley. Junior Varun Shivakumar (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Fremd) made his first cut in the 200-meter backstroke.
For the women, junior Meredith King (Louisville, Ky./duPont Manual) earned her cut in the 200-meter butterfly while junior Taylor Reynolds (St. Louis, Mo./Webster Groves) swam an Olympic Trial time in the 50-meter freestyle.
The Northwestern performances in Iowa City give the two programs seven total swimmers with Olympic Trial cut times ahead of the ConocoPhillips U.S. Nationals Aug. 2-6 in Palo Alto, Calif. In addition to the four Wildcats who earned cuts over the weekend, 2011 graduate Sean Mathews (St. Louis, Mo./Lafayette), junior Charlie Rimkus (Tustin, Calif./Beckman) and senior Jenny Wilson (Bethesda, Md./Sidwell Friends School) previously recorded Olympic Trial times this year.
Last year, Northwestern's men's club, Wildcat Aquatics, placed ninth at the U.S. Nationals as a team. The squad is confident it will improve upon that placing this year.
