EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern has been named an American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award winner for the 2010-11 season, the organization announced today (July 20).
The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that display excellence in the classroom by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team GPA during the entire school year.
Northwestern is one of two Big Ten programs to win the honor (the other being Ohio State), and is one of 19 squads in the 64-team NCAA Championship field to earn the award. NU is one of 92 total NCAA Division I women's volleyball teams to receive the accolade, putting the Wildcats in the top 20 percent of all Division I schools academically and at the very top in terms of combined academic and athletic prowess.
In addition to its success in the classroom last year, Northwestern also had one of its best seasons in program history on the court. The Wildcats won 20 games for the first time since 2005 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Championship. Seniors Sabel Moffett and Naomi Johnson were named AVCA All-America honorable mention choices.
