EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern senior infielder Robin Thompson (Detroit, Mich./Martin Luther King) has been named a Capital One Academic All-District V first-team selection by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Already a two-time Academic All-Big Ten award winner and a 2010 Big Ten Distinguished Scholar, Thompson's Academic All-District honor is the first of her career and the 13th in Northwestern softball history. To be eligible for the award, student-athletes must have a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or better and be in their second academic year at their institution. Thompson now is eligible for consideration on the Academic All-America ballot.
Thompson has turned in a career year as a senior, batting .371 with 30 runs scored, 22 RBIs and 18 steals while starting all 39 of Northwestern's games at third base. The human development and psychological services major earned All-Big Ten second-team accolades as a freshman right-handed batter, then taught herself to slap-hit lefty prior to her sophomore season to take further advantage of her blazing speed. Thompson ranks fifth all-time at Northwestern with 75-career steals.
Thompson and the rest of the 2011 Northwestern senior class play in the final home games of their careers this weekend at Sharon J. Drysdale Field.
