EVANSTON, Ill. -- Senior David Lipsky (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) and junior Eric Chun (Ansung City, South Korea/International Christian School) have been named 2011 Division I PING All-Region selections, announced today (May 31) by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA).
This season marks the third-straight year that both Lipsky and Chun have won the award.
With seven top-20 finishes, four top-10s and 17 rounds at par or better out of his 33 this year, Lipsky has consistently been NU's top performer in tournaments. He entered this week's NCAA Championships with a 71.82 stroke average, currently the sixth-best in Northwestern single-season history.
At the UNCG Bridgestone Golf Collegiate in October, Lipsky made a charge for the ages when he played his final four holes in five-under par with a birdie-birdie-birdie-eagle finish, holing a 30-foot putt on the 54th hole of play to card a career-best 66 and tie for medalist honors. His 14-under 202 tied the school record for lowest 54-hole tournament score set by Luke Donald at the 2001 U.S. Collegiate Championships.
Lipsky nearly repeated that feat at the 2011 Big Ten Championships. After struggling to an opening-round 78, Lipsky rebounded for back-to-back 72s to put himself in the top-10 entering the final round, six shots off the lead. In that final round, Lipsky shot himself out of a cannon, getting to 5-under and within a stroke of the lead through 10 holes before carding a 67 and a third-place result. At the NCAA Colorado Regional, Lipsky repeated his late-round heroics with back-to-back 4-under 68s in the final two rounds. With NU five shots out of the fifth and final NCAA Championships qualifying spot with nine holes to play, Lipsky promptly birdied each of his first four holes on the final nine to jump-start NU's team charge into a qualification spot at the NCAA Championships.
Chun ranks second on the Wildcats this season with a 73.15 stroke average, earning four top-10 finishes and six total top-20 efforts. He has recorded 12 rounds at par or better.
In NU's first event of the spring season, Chun extended his undefeated record at the Big Ten Match Play Championship to 10-0-1 with a perfect 3-0 mark to earn Big Ten Player of the Week honors. Later in the spring, Chun fired a second-round 2-under 70 to earn a runner-up finish at the weather-shortened Illini Spring Classic before placing 10th individually at the 2011 Big Ten Championships.
