EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern's biggest NCAA Championships contingent since 2008 is ready for competition March 24-26 at the University Aquatic Center in Minneapolis, Minn.
Seniors Alex Tyler (Birmingham, Mich./Birmingham Groves) and Sean Mathews (St. Louis, Mo./Lafayette) along with sophomore Charlie Rimkus (Tustin, Calif./Beckman) comprise the biggest group of 'Cats at the national meet since a four-man crew finished 12th in the nation in 2008.
Each of the three days will begin with preliminary heats at noon CT with finals scheduled to start at 7 p.m. CT. Live results and further information is available at the NCAA Championships website.
Tyler qualified for the meet in two different events, earning the No. 19 seed in the 400 IM and the No. 21 seed in the 200 IM. He also will swim the 200 breast at the meet as the 30th overall seed. Tyler earned honorable mention All-America honors in the 200 IM a year ago after placing 15th in the event.
Mathews is Northwestern's highest-seeded swimmer entering the Championships, earning the No. 15 seed in the 200 fly. His seed time of 1:44.14 is .09 of a second away from the school record held by Eric Nilsson, giving Mathews another target in addition to All-America status in his final collegiate meet.
Mathews additionally will swim the 200 IM as the 34th overall seed and the 100 fly as the 51st seed.
Rimkus is making his first appearance in the NCAA Championships after earning his spot in the field in the 400 IM event as the 21st overall seed. Rimkus' other events will be the 1,650 free as the 28th seed and the 500 free as the 32nd seed.
Northwestern is looking to earn a top-25 national finish with its three-man squad in Minneapolis after placing 34th a year ago on the strength of Tyler's two points in the 200 IM.
