SAN DIEGO -- Heavy rains have moved into San Diego and are forecasted to be here a while, forcing the cancelation of Northwestern's Friday night game against San Diego State and forever altering the original Saturday slate.
SATURDAY UPDATE: Saturday now has been canceled completely. There are several clear spots on the radar, but with more rain expected in the evening and the outfield already drenched, the decision has been made to attempt to save the fields for Sunday play.
Northwestern now is scheduled to face No. 10 Washington at 1 p.m. CT Sunday afternoon if the weather feels like allowing such a thing this weekend. (Note: This is a change from the early Saturday announcement of an 11 a.m. CT first pitch). Washington originally was supposed to the NU's second Saturday opponent. Previously scheduled games against San Diego State, Sacramento State and UC Santa Barbara currently are off the table.
The Wildcats did get one game in Friday morning before the rains began during the afternoon, defeating UC Davis under sunny skies, 11-4.
The Friday cancelation announcement did not come as a surprise, especially after softball parent Scott Zolke (father of junior catcher Olivia Zolke) phoned his friend Tom Skilling -- yes, that Tom Skilling of WGN -- to get a detailed Southern California forecast and the reply came back "it's going to pour." Right again, Tom.
