Keylor Chan Reflects on the 2011 Volleyball Campaign

EVANSTON -- With the 2011 season in the rear-view mirror Northwestern head coach Keylor Chan sat down to reflect on the season that was and look ahead to the team's bright future.
The season featured several highlights including wins at Welsh-Ryan Arena over No. 15 Minnesota (3-0 on Oct. 28), No. 22 Ohio State (3-2 on Nov. 11) and No. 2 Nebraska (3-1 on Nov. 26). All three of those teams went on to represent the Big Ten in the NCAA Tournament and the Golden Gophers are one of 16 teams remaining in the field today.
Northwestern players were recognized with several individual accolades throughout the year as well. Stephanie Holthus (Burlington, Ill./Central) and Julie Chin (Naperville, Ill./North) were honored as the Big Ten's Player and Defensive Player of the Week awards following the opening weekend of play on Aug. 29. Katie Dutchman (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines) claimed three straight Defensive and Freshman of the Week honors during the month of October. Yewande Akanbi (Houston, Texas/Dawson) captured the regular season's final Freshman of the Week award on Nov. 28 following a career-best 20-kill output against the Cornhuskers.
Holthus was named All-Big Ten, while Dutchman earned a spot on the league's All-Freshman squad. Madalyn Shalter (Ottawa, Ohio/Ottawa-Glandorf) was recpgnized as Northwestern's Sportsmanship Award recipient.
The Wildcats will return 10 letterwinners in 2012.
