Northwestern Match Notes (PDF)

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Winners of three straight matches, the Northwestern Wildcats will look to continue their winning streak on the road in a pair of Big Ten matches this weekend at Indiana and No. 11 Purdue.

Scouting the Hoosiers:
2011: 8-16, 0-12 Big Ten
Last Week: L at Michigan State (1-3); L at No. 22 Michigan (0-3).
Head Coach: Sherry Dunbar (Ball State, 1992). Fifth season at Indiana (85-77; .525) and ninth overall (193-99; .661).
Fast Fact: Indiana assistant coach Nancy Mueller is no stranger to the Chicagoland area. Mueller spent five seasons as the head coach at the University of Illinois at Chicago where she led the Flames to the championship match of the 2006 Horizon League tournament in her third season at the helm.

Scouting the Boilermakers:
2011: 20-3, 9-3 Big Ten; ranked No. 11 in this week's AVCA top-25 coaches poll.
Last Week: W at No. 22 Michigan (3-2), W at Michigan State (3-1).
Head Coach: Dave Shondell (Ball State, 1981). Ninth season at Purdue (182-106; .632) and ninth season overall.
Fast Fact: Until NU's Katie Dutchman acheived the feat this week, Purdue's Anna Drewry had been the only player in Big Ten history to be named the conference's Freshman of the Week three consecutive times. Drewry was a three-time winner from Nov. 16-30, 2009.

Dutchman Achieves An Historic Three-Peat:
For the third time in 15 days, middle blocker Kaie Dutchman was named the Big Ten Defensive Player and Freshman of the Week on Oct. 31. In a pair of wins over No. 15 Minnesota and Wisconsin, the Del Mar, Calif., native tallied 14 block assists and 14 kills. In the three-set upset over the Golden Gophers, Dutchman had six kills on 12 swings without committing an error. She also totaled four block assists. The next night against Wisconsin, she took her game to an even higher level. Dutchman had 10 block assists, eight kills, three digs, two assists and a service ace in the five-set win.

Northwestern's newest standout in the middle leads the Big Ten with 120 blocks overall this season. Dutchman is percentage points behind Penn State's Katie Slay with 1.445 blocks per set, but leads in conference matches only with 1.57 per set. She ranks 14th in the country in that category. In her last six matches, Dutchman has accumulated an eye-popping 47 total blocks (2.04 per set).

Three Wildcats Pacing Big Ten In Big Stats:
As evidenced in the stats on page six of these notes, three Wildcats are leading or near the top of the Big Ten in their respective specialties following nine weeks of action.

Stephanie Holthus has averaged 4.14 kills per set, good for fourth in the conference and 33rd overall in the NCAA. Junior libero Julie Chin bested the 6.0 digs per set mark with a 6.22 rate on opening weekend; she finds herself second in the conference with a 4.58 digs per set rate after 23 matches. Middle blocker Katie Dutchman is enjoying success at the net as she ranks second in the Big Ten with a 1.45 block-per-set average. Dutchman leads the Big Ten in conference matches only with 1.51 blocks per set. She also checks in at fourth with 0.40 service aces per set.
