Postgame Quotes

Northwestern Head Coach Bill Carmody

On the 3-point deficit at the end of the game...
"We had five guys who could make a shot out there and usually I might take the ball out of bounds but I just felt like everyone should get out on the three-point line pretty much and fake a screen, but there isn't much you can do...We just tried to get the ball to [Michael] Thompson or [Drew] Crawford but we didn't get the shot we wanted." On Draymond Green's putback basket late in the game... "They give you a chance to get back in there but you have to be getting that rebound at the end. You have to get it because when you have 11 or 12 seconds left in the game, instead of having to get that three you can go for two."

On Northwestern overall...
"In the first half I thought we ran our offence pretty decently, we got the shots we wanted to get from the guys we wanted to shoot them. I thought we had some pretty good looks from Thompson, Crawford, and [John] Shurna. In the second half their defense was very good and they cranked it up and we weren't moving or as fluid on offence and we weren't getting the shots we wanted. I liked the way our guys came back. Thompson just sort of took over at the end there and Crawford much improved from his last couple games but you have to get good teams or any team to the point that they're sweating and there is a consequence for missing a shot."

On Northwestern's comeback at the end...
"We've actually been a very good team offensively this year and Drew Crawford came alive in the second half and it was a nice little comeback for us and Michael Thompson decided that enough was enough and he just had to call his own number and that's what we did, kept the ball in his hands."

Michigan State Head Coach Tom Izzo

Opening statement...
"Well I think it's going to be one of those years for us where nothing is going to come easy. We did so good in the beginning, we got up by 10 and I thought, defensively we did so good on [John] Shurna. I didn't call some timeouts that I should have. I just thought we had some veteran guys in that wanted the ball and we just got a little out of whack. I think I'm the one that needs to be blamed for that because I had some timeouts that I could have used. We got a little tired at the end. We were up 13 and had Korie Lucious at the line and when he missed, everybody's heads went down. That was the only disappointing part. We should do that but I'm not going to let two minutes ruin 38. I think Northwestern is a very, very good team. I do think Shurna is not totally healthy right now; he didn't seem to move like I've seen him move on film. But I think our guys did a great job."

On Keith Appling...
"One thing about Keith Appling is that he's going to end up like Charlie Bell, one of the best defensive players, maybe, we've ever had. We wanted him in there and he did a great job. I was pleased with his play. He was very unselfish."

On Draymond Green...
"He's very good at offensive rebounding. You expect your best players to make the best plays at the end and he made one so for that I'm really happy for him."
