EVANSTON, Ill. -- Behind a career-best 11 kills from Stephanie Holthus (Burlington, Ill./Central) and nine kills and seven blocks from Sabel Moffett (Temecula, Calif./Chapparal), Northwestern swept past Morehead State 25-16, 25-19, 25-18 at the Northwestern Challenge at Welsh-Ryan Arena. The Wildcats remain perfect on the year at 4-0 and face Utah at 7 p.m. tonight in the Challenge's finale.
Holthus continues to be impressive in her first matches as a Wildcat, knocking down the 11 kills on 21 attempts with just four errors for a .333 hitting percentage. She also added three blocks and six digs for the 'Cats, while recording the set-clinching kill in both the first and second set of the afternoon.
Moffett had nine kills on 13 attempts with just two errors for a .538 hitting percentage while her seven blocks led a potent Northwestern defensive attack at the nets. The Wildcats out-blocked the Eagles 12-4 on the afternoon, with Naomi Johnson (Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy) adding four and Holthus, Madalyn Shalter (Ottawa, Ohio/Ottawa-Glandorf) and Christina Kaelin (Louisville, Ky./Assumption) each adding three of their own.
Offensively, Johnson and Kaelin came up big up front for head coach Keylor Chan's Wildcats, recording eight and six kills respectively, complemented by five from Shalter.As a team, Northwestern hit .333 for the match, tallying 40 kills on 84 attempts with just 12 errors, compared to Morehead State's .077 attack percentage.
Elyse Glab (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) dished out 36 assists on the afternoon with a kill and two blocks. Julie Chin (Naperville, Ill./North) led Northwestern with 15 digs while Alex Ayers (Playa del Rey, Calif./Marymount) added 10 of her own.
Northwestern looks to capture the 2010 Northwestern Challenge title tonight on its home court facing Utah. The Utes are 3-2 on the year and are coming off a hard-fought 3-1 victory over Mississippi earlier this morning at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Opening serve is set for 7 p.m.
