EVANSTON, Ill. - Kate Allen (Whitehouse, Ohio/Anthony Wayne) scored the fourth goal of her young career and Briana Westlund (Cottage Grove, Minn./Park) added her first career tally as Northwestern powered past Eastern Michigan, 3-1, Sunday afternoon at Lakeside Field.
Allen's 49th minute score broke a 1-1 tie and gave the Wildcats (3-2-2) the lead for good. With Eastern Michigan goalkeeper Mona Budani charging off her line to challenge, Allen buried a shot from the right side of the 18 yard box. The game-winning goal is the third of the season for Allen, meaning the freshman has tallied the game-winner in each of NU's three victories.
Sam Greene (Santa Monica, Calif./Santa Monica) played the ball through from the left side to pick up the assist. Greene now has 15 career assists, moving the senior into a tie for fourth place in the NU record book with her head coach, Stephanie Foster.
The 'Cats padded their lead in the 87th minute when Westlund scored her first career goal on a penalty kick. Northwestern was awarded the penalty after Bo Podkopacz (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) was taken down from behind inside the box.
"It was good to get the result we were looking for," Foster said after the game. "But there's still a lot of room for us to improve. We need to work on putting together a complete game."
Northwestern's first goal of the match came in the 10th minute, when an Eastern Michigan defender headed the ball backward into the net for an own goal. The play was sparked by a long throw-in from freshman Nicole Jewell (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville Road), who made her first career start Sunday.
The Eagles' Paige Sheridan tied the match with a 30th minute goal, one of just three shots on goal allowed by the Northwestern back line.
NU outshot Eastern Michigan in the contest, 14-7. Carolyn Edwards (Lincolnshire, Ill./Stevenson) made a pair of saves to earn her third victory of the season.
Northwestern continues its home stand on Friday, Sept. 17, when the 'Cats host Illinois State at 5 p.m. NU then welcomes Notre Dame to Lakeside Field on Sunday, Sept. 19. Both games will be played as part of a doubleheader with the Northwestern men's soccer team.
