Edwards Named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week

EVANSTON, Ill. -- After posting a pair of shutouts at the Wisconsin Tournament over the weekend, including against then-No. 3 UCLA, Northwestern senior goalkeeper Carolyn Edwards (Lincolnshire, Ill./Stevenson) has been named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week, the conference announced today.
The award is the first for Edwards, a three-year starter in goal for the Wildcats. The senior currently boasts a 0.30 goals-against average, which leads the Big Ten amongst goalkeepers who have played more than half of their team's minutes this season.
Edwards made three saves and helped disrupt 10 corner kick opportunities in Northwestern's 1-0 win over then-No. 3 UCLA Sunday, the highest-ranked opponent NU has ever defeated. Edwards also had four saves in a double-overtime shutout of Cincinnati on Friday.
With 13 career shutouts, Edwards has moved into a tie for third place in the Northwestern career record book alongside current Wildcat assistant coach Erin Ekeberg.
Northwestern's net-minder is the second Wildcat to earn conference laurels in as many weeks. Freshman forward Kate Allen (Whitehouse, Ohio/Anthony Wayne) was named both Big Ten Offensive Player and Freshman of the Week on Aug. 23.
The Wildcats are back in action Tuesday night, finishing off their longest road trip of the season at No. 19 BYU. Northwestern then returns home to open a five-match home stand at Lakeside Field beginning Friday night.
