MADISON, Wis. -- Northwestern outshot Cincinnati, 21-6, but was unable to find the back of the net on any of its chances, ultimately tying the Bearcats in double overtime, 0-0, in the opening game of the Wisconsin Tournament at McClimon Soccer Complex Friday.
The 'Cats' strongest scoring chances came in the second overtime, when NU earned back-to-back corner kicks. Off the first, freshman Kate Allen (Whitehouse, Ohio/Anthony Wayne) was able to create a chance after a Cincinnati defender fell down. Allen blew past the defender and fired a rocket that Cincinnati goalkeeper Rachel Barnette got a hand on in time to punch out of bounds.
Seconds later Northwestern (1-0-1) had another opportunity when Sam Greene (Santa Monica, Calif./Santa Monica) sent a shot into the box from 20 yards out that nearly floated over the Bearcat back line and into the net, but ended up clipping the bottom of the crossbar and bounced back into play.
It was the second consecutive double overtime match for the Wildcats, who won their season opener against DePaul in extra time.
"This was a disappointing result for us," said head coach Stephanie Foster. "We created a ton of chances, but needed to finish one. We're still learning how to win."
Northwestern had several good opportunities to score in regulation, starting in the 17th minute. Caroline Dagley (San Rafael, Calif./The Branson School) separated herself from a defender at the top of the box then fired a high shot that Barnette was just able to punch over the crossbar.
Allen, the reigning Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week, also had a good chance near the end of the first half but put a shot just over the bar from the left side of the 18-yard box. The Wildcats outshot Cincinnati (2-0-1) in the first half, 6-3, with each team registering a pair of shots on goal.
After intermission, the two sides settled into a possession game, with neither team enjoying a good opportunity until the final 10 minutes of regulation. After Jill Dunn (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) served the ball into the box, freshman Bo Podkopacz (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) collided with Barnette near the goalmouth, but the Bearcats keeper was able to keep the ball under control.
Dagley also had another opportunity in the closing moments of the second half, but her shot from the top of the box was cleared off the line by a Cincinnati defender.
NU goalkeeper Carolyn Edwards (Lincolnshire, Ill./Stevenson) made four saves in the match and posted her first clean sheet of the season.
Northwestern is back in action Sunday morning, when the Wildcats will face No. 3 UCLA for the first time in program history. The match begins at 11 a.m., with GameTracker available on NUSports.com and live updates on Twitter @NU_SportsLIVE.
