Allen Sweeps Big Ten Conference Weekly Honors

EVANSTON, Ill. --Northwestern forward Kate Allen (Whitehouse, Ohio/Anthony Wayne) earned a pair of awards from the Big Ten Conference Monday, earning both Offensive Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week honors for her role in the Wildcats' 2-1 double-overtime victory over DePaul.
The freshman scored both of Northwestern's goals in Sunday's season-opener, becoming the first player in program history to score twice in her debut.
Allen's first collegiate goal came in the 77th minute and put the 'Cats in front, 1-0. After DePaul forced overtime with a late goal, she ended the game in the 105th minute. After spinning around a defender, Allen created enough space to fire a shot from 16 yards out and keep NU unbeaten in its last four home openers. Her three shots in the contest were also a team-high.
The performance also earned Allen national recognition, as the freshman earned a spot on the TopDrawerSoccer.com Team of the Week. Allen was one of eleven Division I players nationwide chosen for the team, based on performances in the opening week of the season.
Allen is the first Northwestern freshman to earn Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors. The award is in its second season of existence.
The Wildcats return to action on Friday, when they face Cincinnati in the opening match of the Wisconsin Tournament at 4 p.m. The game is the first leg of a stretch of three matches in five days for the 'Cats, their longest road trip of the season.
