EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern sophomore-to-be Alex Marcotullio (Warren, Mich./De La Salle) concluded a stellar stint as a member of the Great Britain under-20 team over the weekend. Marcotullio averaged 13.9 points per game in helping the squad to a sixth-place finish at the FIBA U20 European Championship in Austria.
He appeared in seven of the team's eight contests, missing half of one game and the entirety of another due to a lower thigh contusion. However, Marcotullio returned from the injury in style, posting 15, 17, 17 and 23 points, respectively, in the team's final four contests.
In the 17-team field, he ranked fifth in 3-pointers made (3.0 per game), sixth in steals (1.7 per game) and 17th in field goal percentage (48.6 percent). Marcotullio shot a stellar 71.4 percent (15-21) on his field goal attempts from inside the arch and 39.6 percent (21-53) from beyond it.
Competing in Division B, Great Britain posted a 5-1 record through its first six games of the tournament. However, the squad missed out on an opportunity to play for promotion to Division A as it was the odd team out, finishing third in points differential in a three-way tie atop its group.
In the round to determine final place standing, Marcotullio posted a team-high 17 points in the team's 91-66 victory over Portugal before notching a tournament-best 23 points to go along with 5 assists in a 103-92 loss to Israel in the 5th/6th place game.
