MADISON, Wis. -- Northwestern dropped a close, 5-2 match to No. 33 Wisconsin Friday afternoon at Nielsen Tennis Stadium. Freshman Spencer Wolf (Coral Springs, Fla./Laurel Springs) was the lone Wildcat to notch a singles victory as the 'Cats will look to bounce back against Purdue Sunday afternoon at Combe Tennis Center.

“We had a solid effort from doubles today,” said head coach Arvid Swan. “Wisconsin is a tough team like all of the other teams in the conference. The Boilermakers will be a difficult opponent on Sunday.”

Wisconsin won the No. 1 doubles match, but NU fought back to take the other two matches and escape with the point. Marek Michalicka and Patrick Pohlmann defeated NU's Andrew McCarthy (Cincinnati, Ohio/Indian Hill) and Tobias Reitz (Reinbeck, Germany/Sachsenwaldschule Reinbeck) at No. 1, 8-4.

Joshua Graves (Milwaukee, Wis./Nicolet) and Wolf teamed to even it up with an 8-4 defeat of Billy Bertha and Moritz Baumann at No. 2. Alex Sanborn (Houston, Texas/Kinkaid) and Eric Spector (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) provided the clincher for the 'Cats, defeating Luke Rassow-Kantor and Chris Freeman, 8-5, at No. 3.

Wisconsin tied it up 1-all with a Marek Michalicka straight set victory over NU's Sidarth Balaji (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax). The 21st-ranked Badger junior proved too much for the Wildcat freshman, playing his first match at No. 2 singles.

The Badgers took the lead behind a 6-1, 6-1 effort from No. 17 Moritz Baumann, who defeated Graves at No. 1. Patrick Pohlmann built on the UW lead with a 6-2, 6-3 win over McCarthy at No. 3.

Northwestern closed the gap to just one with a 6-2, 6-2 Spencer Wolf victory over Wisconsin's Billy Bertha at No. 4. However, it proved to be the only NU singles win of the dual as Sanborn and Spector fell at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.

After three matches on the road, the Wildcat return home Sunday afternoon to host the Purdue Boilermakers. Play is set to being at noon.
