EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern was back at practice Tuesday, conducting a 20-period practice in "shells" -- helmets, shoulder pads and shorts -- while rain and thunderstorms blanketed Chicagoland much of the early morning.
The Wildcats spent a large portion of the practice working on individual drills and team teaching segments, to go along with a few periods of seven-on-seven and full team scrimmaging.
Some individual highlights from Tuesday's session:
Running back Scott Concannon (Columbia, Mo./Rock Bridge) broke loose for a long gain while scrimmaging with the second team.
Redshirt freshman receiver Drew Moulton (Freeland, Mich./Midland) made several catches with the first-stringers, including a diving catch near the goal line.
Defensive end Kevin Watt (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) recovered a fumble for the defense.
Senior superback Josh Rooks (Zeeland, Mich./Holland Christian) made a leaping catch in the corner of the end zone on a perfectly thrown ball by junior Dan Persa (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty).
Following practice, NUsports.com chatted with cornerback Jeravin Matthews (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) for its ongoing "10 Questions With ..." segment. Matthews, who was moved to the defensive backfield late last season after playing receiver and running back his first two years, talks about his new role with the team, his love for special teams and how he spends his free time.
PRACTICE NOTES:
Former Wildcat offensive lineman Matt Ulrich visited practice this morning. Ulrich, who earned a Super Bowl ring while playing for the Indianapolis Colts in 2007, is getting married in July.
Northwestern will hold a full-pad practice Thursday morning before conducting its first scrimmage of the spring on Saturday morning.
The Wildcats' on-the-field successes have resulted in a noticeable increase of visitors (high school coaches, recruits, etc.) to spring practice sessions. Northwestern had well over 100 visitors at Saturday's practice session.
