EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern wraps up its 2010 regular season at home this weekend, hosting the Ohio State Buckeyes and Penn State Nittany Lions on April 23 and 25, respectively. The 'Cats look to improve upon their conference record behind the play of Spencer Wolf (Coral Springs, Fla./Laurel Springs), who leads the 'Cats with 11 singles dual victories.
Saturday's dual against Ohio State is this season's Chipotle Big Match in which the first 50 students at the match will receive free Chipotle coupons. One lucky student will win a quarter's supply.
Sunday's match against Penn State is Senior Day, honoring captain Alex Sanborn (Houston, Texas/Kinkaid) during the break between doubles and singles.
SCOUTING THE BUCKEYES
No. 4 Ohio State leads the Big Ten with an 8-0 conference record after defeating No. 17 Illinois last weekend. The Buckeyes have won 19 consecutive matches this year and lead the all-time record over the 'Cats, 52-39.
The Buckeyes are led by Chase Buchanan, who anchors the No. 1 spot with a 19-1 record. Junior Matt Allare clinched the dual for the Buckeyes, improving to 21-4 overall. Allare has won 12 consecutive matches. Senior Justin Kronauge claimed his 141st career win against Illinois, 30 of which are from this season.
Buckey sophomore Devin McCarthy is the younger brother of Wildcat Andrew McCarthy (Cincinnati, Ohio/Indian Hill). The younger McCarthy is undefeated in dual play, after improving to 12-0.
SCOUTING THE NITTANY LIONS
Penn State is closing out its regular season with a road trip to the Midwest, first taking on No. 27 Wisconsin Friday afternoon before facing the 'Cats Sunday morning at 10 a.m.
Last weekend, Penn State suffered a 5-2 loss to the No. 41 Indiana Hoosiers. Senior Ryan Gormley earned a singles victory in his final home match of his successful Penn State career. Along with Gormley, sophomore Taylor Cohen (Philadelphia, PA.) earned a singles victory for the Nittany Lions.
Northwestern leads the all-time series 16-4, which includes a 5-2 victory over the Nittany Lions last season in University Park.
LAST TIME OUT
Last weekend, the Wildcats finished up their road season at Minnesota and Iowa. The 'Cats dropped a 5-2 match to the Golden Gophers Friday evening.
Against the Hawkeyes, Northwestern took the doubles point and pushed four singles matches to three sets, but the Wildcats were unable to take the victory. The Wildcats jumped ahead by sweeping the three doubles matches in convincing fashion. The Hawkeyes went into the singles matches with a vengeance, taking the first set at every spot but No. 5.
