EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern hits the road for the final time this season, taking on the Minnesota Golden Gophers and Iowa Hawkeyes this Friday and Sunday, respectively. The 'Cats are looking to rebound from two conference losses last weekend to Wisconsin and Purdue behind the leadership of Alex Sanborn (Houston, Texas/Kinkaid) who has won three of his last four matches.
SCOUTING THE GOPHERS
Minnesota is coming off a close victory over Indiana last Sunday. It was the first time this season the Gophers won a dual after losing the doubles point. Minnesota is led by Brendan Ruddock, who is 12-10 for the season. Six of his last eight matches have gone to three sets.
Sebastian Gallego is ranked 80th in the country this week and owns a 15-10 overall record. Tobias Wernet is ranked 102nd and has a 16-12 record. Northwestern beat the Gophers 4-3 last season to snap a three-match losing streak in the series. Minnesota leads the all-time series 45-44-1.
SCOUTING THE HAWKEYES
Iowa is coming off an 0-2 weekend in conference play on the road, dropping matches to Indiana and Illinois last Saturday and Sunday, respectively. The Hawkeyes are anchored by sophomore Marc Bruche, who plays primarily at the No. 1 spot.
Northwestern leads the all-time series over the Hawkeyes, 55-24, including a 4-3 nailbiter last season at Combe Tennis Center.
LAST TIME OUT
Northwestern suffered its third consecutive 5-2 conference loss, this one at the hands of the Purdue Boilermakers, Sunday afternoon at Vandy Christie Tennis Center. NU's points came thanks to singles victories from Joshua Graves (Milwaukee, Wis./Nicolet) and Alex Sanborn, whose victory at No. 6 gives him three wins in his last four matches.
Friday, Northwestern dropped a close, 5-2 match to No. 33 Wisconsin at Nielsen Tennis Stadium. Freshman Spencer Wolf (Coral Springs, Fla./Laurel Springs) was the lone Wildcat to notch a singles victory.
