COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Northwestern's contingent earned a career-best swim Saturday afternoon during preliminary action at the 2010 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships hosted by Ohio State.
In the 100 fly, junior Sean Mathews (St. Louis, Mo./Lafayette) swam a career-best time of 47.91 to place 38th after entering the race as the 47th overall seed. Mathews will swim in his signature event, the 200 fly, on Sunday; he is the 17th seed for that race.
One day after earning honorable mention All-America honors in the 200 IM, junior Alex Tyler (Birimingham, Mich./Birmingham Groves) placed 23rd overall in the 400 IM with a time of 3:49.33. The effort was a three-spot improvement over his seed of No. 26 in the event.
Tyler returns to the pool tomorrow in his final event, the 200 breast.
With two points to its name after Tyler's 15th-place 200 IM finish Friday, Northwestern remains in the team standings. It's exact placing after two days will be determined following Saturday's finals session. For live results from the NCAA Championships, link to NCAA.com.
