COLUMBUS, Ohio -- In its final road match of the season, Northwestern was never able to settle into its groove, falling in three sets at Ohio State 17-25, 14-25, 26-28. The Wildcats fall to 18-11 overall on the season and 8-10 in Big Ten play, dropping one match back of the Buckeyes in the conference savings.
Christina Kaelin (Louisville, Ky./Assumption) led Northwestern with 11 kills and two blocks on the night with Sabel Moffett (Temecula, Calif./Chapparal) adding nine kills and a pair of blocks of her own. Stephanie Holthus (Burlington, Ill./Central) contributed eight kills and seven digs for the Wildcats, complemented by Naomi Johnson's (Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy) six kills and three blocks.
Elyse Glab (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) posted 32 assists for Northwestern with five digs and a block. Julie Chin (Naperville, Ill./North) anchored the back row for the Wildcats with a team-best 13 digs, followed by nine from Madalyn Shalter (Ottawa, Ohio/Ottawa-Glandorff) in her Ohio homecoming with four kills.
Energized by the senior night festivities in Columbus, Ohio State gained the early momentum, using an 8-0 run early in the opening set to break out to a 10-3 advantage. Northwestern clawed to within three on a pair of occasions, the last coming at 16-13, but the Buckeyes used a 9-4 surge down the stretch to close out the opening set with a 25-17 decision.
Just like in set one, Ohio State used a fast start in the second to build an early 15-4 advantage on Northwestern. From that point on, the Buckeyes were able to keep the Wildcats at bay, leading by as many as 12 before cruising to the comfortable 25-14 victory and taking a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.
With its back against the wall, Northwestern was able to avoid an early deficit in set three until Ohio State slowly pulled ahead by six at 20-14. Following a timeout, the Wildcats were able to put together its most spirited rally of the night, eventually pulling ahead and serving for set point at 25-24. But Northwestern was unable to complete the comeback as Ohio State recorded four of the last five points to complete the sweep with a 28-26 victory.
With the road portion of its 2010 regular season now behind it, Northwestern looks to rebound in the final two home matches of the year. The Wildcats host Michigan State Friday night at Welsh-Ryan Arena before taking on 20th-ranked Michigan Saturday night on senior night. Both matches get underway at 7 p.m.
