EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern junior forward John Shurna (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) has been selected as the Big Ten Player of the Week the conference office announced Monday. It is the third career honor for Shurna who also earned the recognition twice as a sophomore.
He tied a career high with 31 points to go along with nine rebounds in the Wildcats' season-opening 97-78 victory at Northern Illinois last Friday. Shurna recorded 22 of his points over the opening 10 minutes of the second half to help NU pull away from the Huskies.
All of Shurna's career-best seven 3-point baskets came after the intermission. The total fell one shy of Craig Moore's school- and Big Ten-record total of eight triples in a half posted at Brown Nov. 22, 2008.
In all, Shurna posted 25 points following the break as Northwestern notched its highest point total in a game since a 97-93 overtime win over No. 8 Michigan March 12, 1994. It was the most points by a Wildcat team in a true road game since a 98-77 victory at Valparaiso Dec. 9, 1975.
Northwestern (1-0) returns to action at 7 p.m. Wednesday as it travels to Texas-Pan American. The Wildcats' home opener is set for 7 p.m. Friday when it hosts Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Tickets for that contest are available at NUsports.com or by calling 888-GO-PURPLE.
