SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- On its first day of action at the 2010 ITA Midwest Regional Championships hosted by Notre Dame, Northwestern won two of its four singles matches and one of two doubles contests on Friday. Junior Joshua Graves was the only Wildcat to advance in both brackets.
Graves knocked off Wisconsin's Petr Satral in the opening round of singles, 6-2, 6-2, and will face Michigan freshman Barrett Franks in round two on Saturday. Graves also picked up a doubles win playing alongside sophomore Spencer Wolf as the two defeated Roman Turtygin and Max Phillips of Northern Illinois, 8-1.
Continuing his strong singles play of late, sophomore Sidarth Balaji advanced Friday with a win over Illinois State's Matez Zlatokovic, winning in straight sets 6-4, 6-1.
Balaji will meet Ohio State's Devin McCarthy -- the brother of Northwestern senior Andrew McCarthy -- in the second round Saturday.
Balaji and teammate Tobias Reitz were unable to get by Michigan's Chris Cha and Shaun Bernstein in doubles, losing by an 8-6 tally.
Complete results, brackets and schedules are available on Notre Dame's official ITA Midwest Regional Championships website linked at the top of the page.
