EVANSTON, Ill. -- On the final day of action at the Wildcat Invitational hosted by Northwestern, NU sophomore Sidarth Balaji matched Iowa's Marc Bruche step for step in the Flight A singles final but ultimately fell, 7-6 (2), 7-5. Also in Flight A, senior Andrew McCarthy managed to pick up a consolation match victory on Sunday.

Taking on Iowa's No. 1 singles player during the recent 2010 dual season, Balaji found himself up 6-5 and serving for the first set against Bruche. But the Hawkeye rallied to pull even at six and won the tiebreaker, 7-2. Balaji held his own throughout the second until Bruche notched a late break to win the set 7-5 and claim the Flight A singles crown.

In Flight A consolation action, sophomore Chris Jackman coasted through the first set of his match against DePaul's Ben Hartman, 6-2. But Hartman answered by taking the second off Jackman, 6-2, and winning the super tiebreaker 10-6 to win the match.

Also in consolation play, Andrew McCarthy won his consolation match over DePaul's Seven Kasper, 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (11-9). It was a dramatic third-set tiebreaker, with McCarthy taking an 8-5 lead before Kasper roared back to gain a match point up 9-8. On the ensuing point, a McCarthy return clipped the net and took a fortuitous bounce over Kasper's head, leveling the score at nine.

After McCarthy reached match point, a potential Kasper passing winner landed just outside the line to seal the match for McCarthy, who finished the weekend with a 3-1 singles mark.

Western Michigan's duo of Michael Calderone and Kazuya Komada were named the tournament's doubles champions based on a lowest games lost per match average.

Next week, Northwestern will head to the ITA Midwest Regional Championships to be held on the campus of Notre Dame. Play begins Friday in South Bend.
