EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Northwestern met up with an energized Michigan State team Saturday night in East Lansing as the Spartans won their fourth-straight against the Wildcats at Jenison Field House, defeating NU 25-21, 26-24, 25-18.
Stephanie Holthus (Burlington, Ill./Central) led the Wildcat attack with 12 kills, complemented by 11 from Christina Kaelin (Louisville, Ky./Assumption). Sabel Moffett (Temecula, Calif./Chapparal) posted six kills with Naomi Johnson (Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy) adding five of her own with a pair of blocks.
Michigan State had the early momentum on its home court, recording five of the first six points of the match in set one. The Spartans would increase their edge to five at 17-12, only to see Northwestern record four-straight to pull to within one. Trailing 22-21, the Wildcats gave up the final three points, dropping set one 25-21.
Northwestern turned the tables on Michigan State in set two by gaining the early advantage at 10-6. The Wildcats were able to keep the Spartans at a three to four point cushion for a large portion of the match until a 3-0 run pulled MSU to within one at 20-19. Michigan State picked an opportune time to take its first lead of the set, pulling ahead 24-23 and holding off Northwestern to steal set two 26-24.
With momentum on its side, Michigan State jumped out to a commanding 7-2 start and never looked back. The Spartans would lead by as many as nine at 21-12 before Northwestern staged one last comeback, clawing to within four at 22-18. But it was too little, too late as Michigan State handed Northwestern its second-straight loss with a 25-18 final set.
Northwestern returns home to close out the first half of the Big Ten season, beginning with a meeting with Ohio State on Friday, Oct. 22. Opening serve against the Buckeyes is set for 7 p.m. at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
