EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern hosted a successful first day of action at the Wildcat Fall Invitational Friday, with NU winning two of its three singles matches while posting a 1-1 mark in doubles. Play continues Saturday beginning at 8 a.m. with two rounds of singles followed by the final round of doubles.
All three Wildcats are competing in the Flight A singles draw, where senior Andrew McCarthy opened his tournament with a third-set tiebreaker win over Western Michigan's Kazuya Komada. McCarthy rebounded from dropping the first set 6-2 to take the second 6-4 and ultimately won the decisive tiebreak, 10-5.
McCarthy's next match will be against Marquette's Logon Collins at 11 a.m. Saturday.
Sophomore Sidarth Balaji was also victorious, claiming a tight 12-10 win in tiebreakers after splitting the opening sets 6-7 (5), 6-4. Balaji is set to face Wisconsin's Petr Satral at 11 a.m. Saturday.
Sophomore Chris Jackman also split the first two sets of his first-round singles match against Wisconsin's Ricardo Martin. But Martin pulled out a 10-5 decision in the breaker, setting Jackman up with second-round opponent Nikita Zotov of Iowa (8 a.m. Saturday).
In doubles, Jackman and Balaji posted an 8-4 win over Western Michigan's Casey Cullen and Pablo Olivarez in the first round. The 'Cats then took on DePaul's duo of Bartosz Jozwiak and Seven Kasper, falling to the Blue Demons 8-4.
Jackman and Balaji will conclude their doubles portion of the Wildcat Invite with a consolation match against Wisconsin's Petr Satral and Ricardo Martin at 6 p.m. Saturday.
