Northwestern Head Coach Bill Carmody
Opening statement...
"I think Texas Pan-American deserved to win. I would say we let them hang around, but they actually jumped into the lead on us. They guarded us, and we can't win too many games like that. They had a few big guys, and they did a good job pushing us off the blocks. The only guy who was effective down there was (John) Shurna. We went to the 1-3-1 zone, and they picked it apart. I can just say that we were very fortunate to win this game."
On Michael Thompson's condition...
"He has to play to get better. He's a tough nut, but it's hard when you don't practice. Other guys had to come through. Tonight, we had one guy offensively and that was Shurna. We had one guy making shots and getting rebounds and not much else. You could see it. There was no life there."
On why Northwestern committed so many turnovers...
"We averaged 11 turnovers a game before tonight, and I think we had 11 turnovers in the first half. I think it was carelessness. We were playing someone we thought we should beat so we were careless and carefree with the ball. You can't do that. You are playing against guys in college basketball who can play. They weren't little guys who made a shot here and there; they were guys who were going by us. They also had a few big guys who were causing real trouble for us."
On John Shurna being the go-to-guy...
"Shurna is definitely taking on more of the scoring, and you saw that tonight. He wasn't shooting the ball too much. He was letting the game come to him, but then he saw the direction the game was taking so he starting taking some shots which he had to do. I'm happy with his play, but this isn't an individual sport. It's a team sport so we have to all play together and play better as a team."
