Northwestern Sweeps Double Dual With Carthage, Lewis

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern hosted NCAA Division II Lewis and Division III Carthage Saturday at the Norris Aquatics Center, coming out on top of both dual meets.
NU bested Lewis, 107-87, and defeated Carthage, 126-73. The wins improve Northwestern's dual-meet record to 4-3 on the season. Carthage narrowly defeated Lewis, 103-101, and in a women's meet between the two visitors, Lewis defeated Carthage, 114-90.
Northwestern largely swam off-event in the meet, with head coach Jarod Schroeder placing a lot of swimmers into what likely will be their third events at the Big Ten Championships next month.
The team of Varun Shivakumar (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Fremd), Nathan Butler (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin), Chris Doman (Pittsburgh, Pa./St. Charles Prep (Columbus, Ohio)) and Charlie Rimkus (Tustin, Calif./Beckman) opened the meet with a Northwestern win in the 400 medley relay, swimming a time of 3:25.26.
John Frutiger (Alma, Mich./Alma) was NU's top finisher in the 1,000 free, coming in third behind a pair from Lewis with a time of 9:51.99. Jan Hanulik (Cavisov, Czech Republic/Sportovni Gymnazium) took fourth in 9:54.65.
Peter Park (Princeton, N.J./Peddie School) roared out to an early lead in the 200 free and cruised home to win in 1:42.41. Brian Kerr (East Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) came in second for the 'Cats with a 1:44.25.
Alex Tyler (Birmingham, Mich./Birmingham Groves) came out on top of the 50 free with a 21.61 in a very competitive race. Butler was third overall with a 21.92. In the 200 IM, Sean Mathews (St. Louis, Mo./Lafayette) won with a time of 1:56.30, topping Shivakumar's second-place time of 1:59.09. Cal Staben (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay) took fourth with a 2:03.25.
Tony Mattar (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) won the 200 fly with a season-best time of 1:51.51, placing himself third on NU's top times list in the event for the year. Doman came in third and Frutiger fourth in the race.
Tyler then won his second sprint free event of the day, using a 46.71 to out-touch teammate Kerr's second-place effort of 46.95 in the 100 free. Alexander Ratajczyk (Parlin, N.J./Sayreville War Memorial) made it an NU sweep of the top three spots with a 47.11
Lewis won its second event of the day with a victory in the 200 back. Park was NU's top finisher with a season-best time of 1:56.42 in the race. Lewis again came out victorious in the 500 free, taking the top two positions in front of NU's Shivakumar, who was third with a 4:49.58.
Butler (2:04.08), Rimkus (2:07.73), Park (2:09.55) and Staben (2:11.91) finished first-through-fourth in the 200 breast for Northwestern heading into the final relay.
Northwestern won the final 400 free relay with a 3:13.82 from the team of Doman, Hanulik, Mattar and Staben.
Northwestern returns to action at 11 a.m CT Saturday, Jan. 23, against Iowa at the Norris Aquatics Center.
