Wisconsin 60, Northwestern 50

Northwestern head coach Bill Carmody

Opening statement
"I think it was 39-36 when we stopped them, came down, and had a turnover. Then we stopped them again, came down, drove to the basket, had two foul shots and missed them both. It was just an opportunity twice to go up by five or six. Someone just told me they got the last 11 rebounds of the game. They'd miss a shot, rebound, miss a shot, rebound, you know two, three, four rebounds. I thought it was a winnable game, but [Trevon] Hughes came through. He missed a shot, then he lined up another one, misses and then knocks it down. He's a senior and he's a very good player. I just thought their backcourt played very well. [Jason] Bohannon in the first half, we couldn't keep tabs on him. And then Hughes came through in the last five minutes, basically. Things that just stick out in my mind, and I haven't looked at the stats or anything, just the foul shooting and rebounds. It's a good team. Like I said, I think it was a winnable game. Our guys are disappointed. They defended us on the perimeter very well. We had to get the ball inside a little more and we just did not do that."

Wisconsin Head Coach Bo Ryan

Opening Statement
"I'm just happy for our guys that we finally found what it looked like to move the net. It didn't look like it was moving very much."

On playing at Welsh-Ryan...
"This is a tough place to play because of how well they play here. They've played well on the road this year too, and the buzz is incredible. This is the most buzz I've seen at a Northwestern game, and they are a very good team. We beat a very good team. Our senior guards made the difference. That maturity was huge. Trevon had open looks, he took good shots. To finally hit some and get some distance with Northwestern was huge."

On the play of Trevon Hughes...
"I've seen guys go through those streaks. If he were a freshman, maybe he wouldn't be on the floor after that rough start, unless he had proven himself in some way. But you can't take Trevon Hughes and not have him on the floor in a tight game in a hostile environment against a system that Bill Carmody runs, because he has experience with it."

On playing with patience...
"You have to be disciplined and focused otherwise it's not going to work. This isn't the only team you have to be patient with to get your shots, but you really have to against their system."

On the future for Northwestern...
"They've had an injury or two, but have fought back to play with a competitive edge. I still think they can make it. Hold on to your hats because the Big Ten is going to get crazy."
