MADISON, Wis. -- Northwestern held off both a challenging field and less-than-ideal weather conditions to finish fourth at the 2009 Lady Northern Invitational, hosted by Wisconsin. It is the second top-five team finish for the Wildcats this season, who posted a 25-over 889 (297-289-303) and topped seven of their Big Ten rivals.
After having the second round cut short by inclement weather Sunday, Northwestern took to the course to play the final round and a half early this morning at the University Ridge Golf Course. It was sophomore Kylie Fuller (Temecula, Calif./Chapparal) who found the groove for the 'Cats, tying a career-best with a 1-over 73 over the final 18 holes and finishing at 6-over 222 (75-74-73) for an 11th-place finish -- the first top-15 finish of her Northwestern career.
Fuller was one of three Northwestern golfers that finished among the top-20, being joined by freshman Lauren Weaver (Scottsdale, Ariz./Cactus Shadows) and junior Innapha Tantanavivat (Bangkok, Thailand/David Leadbetter Academy). Weaver posted an 8-over 224 (75-71-78) to finish in a tie for 16th, while Tantanavivat's 9-over 225 (74-71-80) was good enough for an 18th-place tie.
Sophomore Alexandra Lederhausen (Hinsdale, Ill./Central) shot a 12-over 228 (73-78-77) to finish in a tie for 27th, four shots better than junior Kelsey Lindenschmidt's (West Chester, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) 16-over 232 (79-78-75) in her first tournament of the season. Junior Rebecca Lederhausen (Hinsdale, Ill./Central) rounded out the scoring for Northwestern with a 21-over 237 (82-73-82).
Purdue used a late third-round charge to overtake Michigan State and capture the team title with a 1-over 865, finishing 13 strokes better than both the Spartans and Ohio State in second place. Iowa State finished two shots back of the Wildcats in fifth-place, with Wisconsin, Indiana, Minnesota, Illinois and Michigan rounding out the top-10.
Northwestern looks to keep up its strong start to the 2009-10 season next Monday, Oct. 5, and Tuesday, Oct. 6, as it hosts the second annual Windy City Collegiate Championships at the Glen Club in Glenview. The Wildcats will welcome 14 schools to the Chicagoland area as NU competes in its fourth tournament in as many weeks.
