EVANSTON, Ill. -- Junior Sabel Moffett (Temecula, Calif./Chapparal) had a match-high 15 kills for Northwestern, but it wasn't enough as NU falls to Ohio State 13-25, 25-27, 21-25 at Welsh-Ryan Arena. The Wildcats drop to 9-5 on the year and are 0-2 through the first weekend of the Big Ten slate.
Moffett's 15 kills came on 26 attempts with six errors for a .346 hitting percentage as she added a pair of blocks. Junior Naomi Johnson (Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy) added six kills for the Northwestern attack with senior Ariel Baxterbeck (Menlo Park, Calif./Chapparal) recording five kills and six digs on the night.
Junior Elyse Glab (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) dished out 28 assists to compliment a pair of kills and a block while senior Kate Nobilio (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) anchored the NU defense with 14 digs. Sophomore Alexandra Ayers (Playa del Rey, Calif./Marymount) added nine digs and three kills as well.
Ohio State (13-2, 1-1 Big Ten) found the early momentum, using a 10-2 run to break open a tight first set and claim a 21-9 lead on the Wildcats. NU was able to pull to within nine at 21-12, but that was as close as the rally would get as the Buckeyes took the opening set 25-13.
It appeared the 'Cats had claimed the momentum in set two, as Northwestern pounced to a 16-9 edge. But Ohio State continued to chip away at the lead, eventually taking a one-point advantage at 23-22. NU would take the next two points, giving itself set point at 24-23. But the Wildcats weren't able to put the Buckeyes away, and it was OSU that eventually prevailed 27-25.
Another tight contest played out in the third set, with Ohio State gradually building a five-point advantage at 20-15. Northwestern was able to get to within two at 22-20 and again at 23-21, but that was as close as it could get, falling 25-21.
Kristen Dozier and Katie Dull each had 10 kills for the Buckeyes with Kelli Barhorst adding eight kills and six blocks on the night.
Up next for the Wildcats is a trip to Michigan, beginning with a stop in Ann Arbor for a battle with the eighth-ranked Wolverines on Friday, Oct. 2, at 6 p.m. CT. Northwestern then heads down the road to East Lansing for a date with 16th-ranked Michigan State at 5:30 p.m. CT on Saturday, Oct. 3.
